This was an interest Chapter. The chapter made many great points about comprehension. It mentions some great strategies before, during and after. It so cool to read these strategies and know the I unconsciously used them when I read to the two year old at word. One can never use these strategies to early.
Predicting is a before reading strategy. The conversation on page 179 is the same conversation I had with my students when we were going to read The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear
by Audrey Wood, Don Wood. I asked a lot of "why" questions; I was getting the students to think critically and as the book said the students were drawing from their background knowledge.
During reading I "stop reading from time to time and asked inferential questions." I asked them "why did the mouse want the strawberries?" Although the students did not have much life experience they knew that the mouse may have been hungry. This is my favorite part in read. It's interesting to see what the students are thinking when I'm reading the story.
For after reading, I normally have a class discussion and various kinds of questions. Then have the student their favorite part of the story. I know for older students I may have to be a little more complex but the same idea applies.
I found a good website that can help students in all levels with their comprehension.
